Combatting isolation and building global solidarity: Supporting an online community of migrant domestic workers

The challenge

As Learning Partner for PorticusIgniting Workers’ Rights Programme, we have been working with migrant worker networks across Asia and the Middle East since 2021. Despite differences in geography and organisational structure, migrant domestic worker networks in these regions face common challenges, including rights violations, marginalisation, and systemic inequality. Many shared a desire for more accessible, informal, and worker-led opportunities for connection and learning, in spaces where they could build solidarity and set their own agendas outside of formal institutional settings.

How we helped

In 2023, Lighthouse began convening a series of online meet-ups for domestic worker networks involved in the program. Led and facilitated by Ruth Ngigi, a domestic worker herself, these gatherings focused on strategic priorities, shared challenges, leadership, and wellbeing. Agendas were co-created with participants, and wrap-around support was provided to ensure accessibility and encourage full participation.

This peer-led approach fostered a sense of safety, ownership, and empowerment. Participants noted that the meetings felt different from other experiences: more open, respectful, and genuinely inclusive. Alongside the meet-ups, we worked with Porticus to embed migrant worker voices more deeply across the wider program, including in partner meetings and events.

Looking forward

Participants described the meet-ups as energising, empowering, and unlike anything they had experienced before. Many reported feeling less isolated, more confident, and better equipped in their advocacy efforts. As the program continues, there is a strong appetite for deepening and expanding these connections through more informal exchanges, in-person visits, and cross-sectoral learning opportunities.

These meet-ups have promoted a sense of community and belonging. It’s been a great opportunity for us domestic workers to form friendships, learn from one another, and find solidarity.

These activities have given us new strength and built solidarity. They remind me that, even though the challenges are great, there are people worldwide advocating and supporting each other. It is truly empowering.
